Matthew Jacques
Master Class

In whole this week (07. NOV. 22 ~ 11. NOV. 22), VFX Compositor and Senior lecture Matthew Jacques has taught advanced 'Nuke' compositing skills through 'Indy Jones' project and one of scenes from a short film 'Tears of Steel (2012).'

EXERCISE 01 - INDY JONES

In this exercise, we have been taught advanced compositing skills with using five different elements (Blood splatting, Characters, Gun smoke, Muzzle flash and Background), and also additional skills such as Colour Balance and adding Vignette Effect and Camera Shake node.

EXERCISE 02 - ROPE SCENE MARKER REMOVAL

In this exercise, we have been taught advanced Marker Removal skills in Nuke. On this Rope scene, there were many Markers on the background and it was quite tricky to remove some of markers that were being disappeared behind of Rifle Gun and some cloth.

BASIC MARKER REMOVAL

To remove Marker on the background of scene, I tracked and put a Roto around a marker, and connected to 'Mask' pipe on the 'Keymix'. To have a test, I brought 'Constant' node and connected on A pipe of 'Keymix' node.

After having a test with using coloured Constant, I brought 'Transform' and Multiply' nodes and connected to A pipe of 'Keymix' node.

WHEN THE MARKER GOES BEHIND

When a marker goes behind of foreground, I used 'Multiply' node and set keyframes.

USING STENCIL MERGE NODE

When a marker goes behind of Rifle on foreground, I put Roto shape on Rifle and connected to the Merge(Stancil) node

To make the scene look more natural, I added Rotopaint and put 'Clone' paint around the Rifle Muzzle.

USING KEYER NODE

When markers goes behind objects' hair or cloth which are tricky to remove it, I used 'Primatte' or 'Keylight' keyer nodes to get foreground's alpha channel. When you done with getting alpha channel of the foreground, then you could use 'Stencil' Merge node to take the alpha channel out.
