WEEK 1 - INTRO TO NUKE

NUKE UI

NODE GRAPH

VIEWER

PROPERTIES

NODE TOOLBOX

  • In the Viewer window show the render output of connected nodes

  • Node graph is the primary tool in Nuke for applying effects by connecting the lines between nodes. By hitting [TAB] and typing in, you can bring different nodes

  • Properties panels give you all information about current a node that you selected, so that you can edit in detail.

Commonly Used Nuke Nodes

(Accessed via [TAB] button or shortcut key)

RGB & ALPHA CHANNEL

  • Generally, Nuke works with Red, Green and Blue colour channels and the Nuke combines the three RGB values into the image

  • Alpha channel is taken away particular a part of image and isolated. a White part of image is one value and black part is transparent. The alpha channel cut the section of RGB values.

BASIC COMPOSITING (THE MERGE NODES)

BLENDING MODE

The Merge Node combines a Foreground image and a Background image into one image by connecting A part to Foreground and B part to Background.

WEEK 2 - ROTOSCOPE

BASIC ROTOSCOPING

THE ROTOPAINT TOOLBAR

The Copy node is to carry on the RGB value from the image (The rolling ball from the Read node) and take the Alpha channel from the Roto node, and combine the two nodes into the copy node. On the Roto node toolbar, there are many different type of Spline to select and manipulate. I found a frame where the ball has the sharpest edges and used B-Spline tool to crop and manipulate the rounded object.

MATT OVERLAY

APPLIED THE BLUR NODE AND MODIFIED THE FEATHER VALUE ON THE ROTO NODE PANNEL

The Premult node multiplies the input’s RGB channels by its alpha. In this composition, the Premult node allows the object to be cut out and taken away as the Roto shape from the background image. The Blur node helps the selected Roto shape's edges make smooth.

ROTOSCOPE ANIMATING

After connecting the Copy node and the Roto node, clicked the object's each corner and activated with using 'Cusped Bezier' in the RotoPaint Tool Bar. The selected building's roof Roto shape drags to the other frame and moves, scales up and rotates, and the timeline is set the key frame automatically. The more key frames set, the more natural Roto shape moves.

The Grade node connects to the Blur node, and the Premult node make disable. After manipulating the image in the Grade colour tool bar, the Grade node has been effected in only the top of building.

WEEK 3 - COMPLEX ROTOSCOPE

ROTO SHAPES

After trimming down the scene (1010 - 1050) and bringing the Copy and Roto node, draw the finger shape with Beziers and B-Splines from the RotoPaint ToolBar. The shape is able to rotate or scale up and down by frames with dragging the shape and relocating Pivot Point.

MOTION BLUR

To apply the Motion Blur to Roto Shape, click the Roto Curve icon that whether motion blur is applied to the shape

WEEK 4 - BASIC KEYING

GARBAGE MASK

The Outside Mask is the garbage mask and is used to remove unwanted objects (lighting rigs, etc) from the foreground. The mask is taken from the OutM input to Keylight. The luminance or the alpha of this input is set using the OutM Component parameter.

LUMA KEYING

A luma key (short for luminance key) is a term for removing parts of an image using the brightness as a method of selection.

KEYER NODES

In the keyer node, there is a graph with four yellow bars A, B, C and D, which represents the operation values. When the view is swiched to alpha

MERGE NODES
  • Over : This is the default operation. Layers image A over B according to the alpha of image A.

    • This is the most commonly used operation. Used when layering a foreground element over a background plate.

  • Stencil : This is the reverse of the out operation. Only shows the areas of image B that do not overlap with the alpha of A.

  • Plus : The sum of image A and B. Also available from Merge > Merges > Plus. Note that the plus algorithm may result in pixel values higher than 1.0.

    • Useful for compositing laser beams, but you’re better off not using this one for combining mattes.

  • Mask : This is the reverse of the in operation. Only shows the areas of image B that overlap with the alpha of A.

LIGHTWRAP
  • LightWrap can help composite objects into a very bright background by ’wrapping’ or spilling light from the background onto the foreground.

EXERCISE

CHROMA KEYING

Chroma Keying is a green and blue screen keying that can take advantage of the local GPU. Use the screen color selector to choose a color from the Source input to use as the blue/green screen color. To remove blue/green spill from the foreground object, use the despill bias control to pick skin tones from the source. Use the matte parameters to improve the matte.

KEYLIGHT
  • Keylight is an industry-proven color difference keyer. Use the Screen Color selector to choose a color from the Source (Cmd+Shift+Alt+click and drag) input to use as the blue/green screen color and the View dropdown menu to judge the key.

  • Clip Black sets the cut off point below which alpha values in the Screen Matte are set to zero.

  • Clip White Sets the cut off point above which alpha values in the Screen Matte are set to the white point.

RGB

ALAPH CHANNEL

ERODE (FILTER)

Filters input pixels relative to the size control, and is particularly useful with mattes. Negative values cause brighter areas to expand into darker areas and positive values cause darker areas to expand into lighter areas. Use the filter dropdown to control the erode computation speed (box) versus quality (gaussian).

EXERCISE

WEEK 5 -  ADVANCED KEYING

SCOPES

  • Vector displays colour, saturation, and hue information for the current frame.

  • Waveform scope provides information on luminance, or brightness, which you can use to decide whether the footage is over or under exposed.

  • Histogram provides three colour channel and luma channel information that describes the distribution of red, green, blue, and luma pixels throughout the current frame.

COMPLEX GREENSCREEN EXERSICE

DENOISE

The Denoise node is an efficient tool for removing noise or grain from your footage. It uses spatial filtering to remove noise without losing image quality.

KEYMIX

Keymix layers put two Keylight nodes together using a specified Roto shape or image as a mask.

DESPILL
GARBAGE MATTE

The Garbage Mask(Outside mask) is used to remove unwanted objects from the background(on the green screen).

WEEK 6 -  TRACKING IN NUKE

ONE POINT TRACK

TRACKER NODES
  • Tracker node allows to extract animation data from the position, rotation, and size of an image.

  • In the Tracker box (anchor box), the inner box is the pattern box, that’s the pattern you are trying to track over time. Be able to scale this by click+dragging the ends. The outer box is the search box. This is where the node goes if it has a hard time finding the pattern.

After clicking to 'add track', place the anchor box on the features and press       (Track forwards) button, then the box track the features.

TWO POINT TRACK

PLANAR TRACKER

Once the Roto shape is made on the window, apply planar-track.

CORNERPIN2D

The CornerPin2D node is designed to map the four corners of an image sequence to or from positions derived from tracking data. The each corner frames is copied 'to' and applied 'no animation'.

WEEK 7 - JOSH PARKS MASTERCLASS

WEEK 8 -  COLOUR & GRADING

GRADE

LUMINANCE

To match the brightness of foreground with the brightness of background, control LIFT, GAIN, MULTIPLY and GAMMA values with on the luminance channel.

COLOUR WHEEL AND SLIDE
GRADE MASKING

To highlight the woman's shoulder blighter due to the sunshine on the background, bring Grade node and Roto node. After drawing the mask around her shoulder, connect mask from Grade node, and control Gamma value.

GRADE ANIMATING

SET GRADE NODE KEYS

To get rid of some dots on the floor, a patch is created and covered up the dots. But the patch is still visible on the some particular frames. Bring the grade node and set the multiply value keys across the timeline to make the patch look more realistic.

WEEK 9 -  CLEANUP & PATCH REPAIR

CLEANUP ROTO PAINT AND TRACKER

ROTO PAINT (CLONE TOOL)

The Clone tool is one of the RotoPiant tools. The Clone tool can remove unwanted features from the plate or from a different input by painting over them.

• Shift + drag on the Viewer to change brush size.

• Cmd + click and drag to set the clone offset.

TRACKER

I brought Tracker node and tracked the sticky notes on the green screen through the scenes.

I brought Clone tool from RotoPaint node and painted the four sticky notes on the background with one movement. And changed all four clone paints' life time to 'All frame'.

On the Transform tab in the Tracker control panel, I changed the transform type to 'match-move' and set the reference frame to '1201' where the scene starts.

  • match-move : transforms another image so that it moves to match the tracked points.

  • When transform is set to match-move, sets the frame in the input sequence to use as the reference or identity frame.

Once tracking is complete, you can 'cmd + drag-and-drop' the translate information to link other nodes.

FINAL

CLEANUP STATIC PATCH

In this scene, an old man and two women are walking. To take the old man out from the scene and make the women keep walking in, we are going to create a static patch over where the old man is and freeze a frame where he is out on the scene.

TRACKER AND FRAME HOLD

Because the scene has a very slight movement, bring the Track node and track on the stair. Changed the transform type to 'match-move' and set the reference frame to '1100' where the old man completely disappears on the scene.

FRAME 1100

To freeze a particular frame, use the FrameHold node. Frame '1100' is where the old man is disappeared.

STATIC PATCH

To put the static patch on the scene, bring the Roto node and draw Roto shape on where the guy is moving. And bring the Copy and Premult node, and put the Tracker node just under the Premult node.

In this scene, the women start cutting off from where the patch is.

Bring the Multiply node and set the value key frame to 1 just before the woman walks in through the patch and set the key frame to 0 when the woman starts walking through in.

MULTYPLY NODE

REGRAIN AN IMAGE

DENOISE

When the scene is zoomed in, we might see it has grain. To get rid of the grain, bring the Denoise node and put just before FrameHold node. Before apply ReGrain, need to get rid of the grain first.

GRAIN

The Grain node allows an image add synthetic grain. Bring the wipe control and makes the viewer display a split-screen of two images (Original image and Grain image). And match the Grain value with Original RGB Background image with controlling Size, Irregularity and Intensity value.

  • Size : shrinks or enlarges the grain granules

  • Irregularity : increases or decreases the random quality of the grain

  • Intensity : increases or decreases the contrast of the grain

WEEK 10 -  COMPLEX CLEANUP

CLEANUP CROWD

PLANAR TRACK ON THE GROUND FLOOR

To create planar track, bring the Roto node and draw Roto shape on the ground floor. Once it’s done, create planar track by dragging the shape and mouse right clicking. Plus, select ‘ConnerPin2D (relative, baked)’ which is to wrap the image according to the relative transform between the current frame and the reference frame.

FRAME 1001

Bring the FrameHold node and freeze on frame 1001. And draw Roto shape on the around where people are.

CLONING PEBBLE

Put the RotoPaint node above the FrameHold and bring the Clone tool to cleanup the crowd by cloning the pebble. When it is finished, put CornerPin under the Premult node and connect with the background image with Merge node.

GRADE (MULTIPLY)

To make the floor darker, bring and put the Grade node under the Copy node, with masking (drawing) the Roto shape smaller than the first Roto shape. To make the edge of the Roto shape soften make feathers. And drop the multiply value on the Grade node to look Roto shape darker.

FIANL

PATCH ON THE MOVING WATER

PLANAR TRACK

Make PlanarTrack on this still area and bring CornerPin2D (relative, baked).

PATCH

Bring the Copy and Roto node and draw Roto shape on the near boat to build and cover the bunch of patch up on the boat. Bring up the feathering to soften the edge of the Roto shape and put Blur node under the Roto node.

Put the Transform handle on the centre of Roto shape by cmd + dragging, then the shape can move. When it’s done put the CornerPin2D under Blur node.

To build another patch up different part of the boat, copy all nodes and paste, and draw another Roto shape and bring another Transform node and merge with previous Merge node.

COVER UP THE ROPE

To paint out the Rope area, bring and draw Roto shape and drag the Roto shape on the water over the rock. To stencil out the rock, bring the new Roto and draw around the edge of the rock, and connect with Stencil Merge node. After that put CornerPin2D under the new Roto node.

FINAL

I also cleaned up the lighthouse.

WEEK 11 -  KEY SKILLS RECAP

APPLYING PATCH AND CHANGING LOGO

LOGO REMOVAL

To remove the Logo on the box, bring the Roto node and draw shape around the Logo. Once it's done, draw clone on the Logo to cover up and connect to plannertracker.

REPLACE THE LOGO & CORNERPIN

Set a Cornerpin  and bring the new logo.

KEYING AND TRACKING MARKER

TRACK

Bring the Track node and track track marker on the background.
